Detroit police temporarily grounded Lime electric scooters Wednesday night after social media posts encouraged teenagers to head downtown and gather near Campus Martius Park.

If you're not familiar with the term, a teen takeover is basically a massive gathering organized through social media, with potentially hundreds of young people showing up at a public place at the same time.

These events have happened in cities across the country. While they can start with teenagers simply wanting to hang out, they've sometimes turned into major headaches for police, including traffic problems, property damage and even violence.

Minneapolis Scooter Takeover Adds Context

Detroit police have not said whether an actual teen takeover happened Wednesday night around Campus Martius. They also have not announced any arrests or detentions connected to the situation.

The timing is interesting because Minneapolis dealt with its own scooter-related chaos over the weekend. Hundreds of people reportedly rode electric scooters through downtown streets, sidewalks and even onto an interstate highway in what was being called a “scooter takeover.” So Detroit police apparently weren't taking any chances according to WWJ.

Lime Scooters Return to Detroit Streets Thursday

The good news for anyone who actually needs a scooter to get around Detroit is that Lime scooters were unlocked again Thursday morning. And, just to clarify, Lime scooters are those dockless electric scooters you unlock through the Lime app, ride wherever you're going and then park within the company's designated service area.

So, crisis apparently averted... for now. And somewhere, there's probably a Lime scooter is probably wondering why the heck it got grounded for the night.
